Award Winning Scrimshaw

The photos on these pages are of award winning pieces.  I have taken several shots in different lights to give the best representation of the work.

This is a polychrome knife I call, "The Buffalo Hunter."  The blade was made by Ray Rybar and was handled by me.  The blade is approx. eleven inches long and the handle about six inches in length.  This took me about three days to complete and looks great in person.

Polychrome is multi-colored engraving or scrimshaw.  It's done with colored inks, dyes, and watercolors.  This knife was my introduction to a group of Scrimshanders who come from Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio.

This is the model for a Rum Horn that I made several years ago.  The original has been sold but this is a good representation of Scrimshaw.  You will notice the repetition of the Sun motif.  I use this in a lot of pieces.

This is a better view.  This Rum Horn holds approx. 6oz. and is almost four inches square.

This is a tinderbox.  It is approx. eight inches in diameter and five inches high.  The top and base are made of cherry wood and the brass candle holder is a reproduction.  Inside the box you would find everything to light your bedside candle.  This one has everything also.
